This view of a courtyard on the Rue de Valence in Paris places a carriage and surrounding buildings within a tight, shadowed enclosure. Eugène Atget made such street-level records of the city between about 1890 and 1927, documenting older neighborhoods, shopfronts, and courtyards as Paris was being remodeled. After his death, Berenice Abbott, who had worked with him, helped bring his archive to wider attention. This print comes from a 1956 New York portfolio of 20 of his photographs, published as number 13 in the set.
