The caption identifies this glass negative as a view of the battleship *New York* under construction, a detail the Bain News Service recorded on its negative or caption card that has not been independently verified. The ship was a dreadnought-class battleship built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey, and launched in 1912, so the subject lies across the Delaware from Philadelphia rather than within New York City's streets. Bain's photographers supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and scenes of naval construction like this one document the buildup of American sea power before the First World War.
