Christy Mathewson, shown here as a New York Giants pitcher in the National League, was one of the most respected pitchers of his era, known for pinpoint control and a sharp fadeaway pitch. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and the 1909 date was assigned by later researchers. Bain's glass plates from these years capture early baseball celebrity as the sport was growing into a national business.
