Antonio Sala is identified here as governor of Sia Pueblo, a Keres-speaking village in north-central New Mexico, a post that linked the community's own leadership to outside authorities. Adam Clark Vroman, a Pasadena photographer, made the portrait around 1900 while documenting Native peoples of the Southwest. Pueblo governors of that era were chosen under local custom and often dealt with territorial and federal officials on the village's behalf. The title and portrait format together show how a sitter's civic role was recorded in such pictures.
