Francisco Vigil, listed in the record as governor of San Ildefonso Pueblo, is the subject of this portrait, made around 1900 by Adam Clark Vroman, a Pasadena photographer who recorded Pueblo people across the Southwest. San Ildefonso is a Tewa-speaking community on the Rio Grande north of Santa Fe. Its governor was an elected leader who dealt with outside authorities while the pueblo kept its own councils and ceremonies. Portraits from this period were often made for collectors and curious visitors, so they reflect both the sitter's dignity and the photographer's choices about how Pueblo leaders would be seen.
