Labeled as a Pueblo hunter and tentatively placed at Isleta in New Mexico, this figure is set against the Rio Grande farming communities, where hunting supplemented agriculture and trade. The photographer, Charles F. Lummis, was a writer and western promoter who spent much of the 1880s and 1890s in the Southwest, recording its peoples and landscapes in print and pictures. The catalog data comes from an old caption card and is unverified, so the exact place and date remain open. Even so, the picture shows how outside observers chose to document Pueblo life around the turn of the century.
