Nampeyo, a Tewa Hopi potter from the Hano pueblo on First Mesa in northeastern Arizona, appears here decorating a vessel. She became known for reviving the painted designs of the old Sikyatki pottery, whose broken pieces she studied after archaeologists excavated the nearby ruin in the 1890s. The print was made by Homer Earle Sargent, Jr., of Chicago, and registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which suggests it was meant for wider circulation. The caption data comes from an old card and has not been fully verified, so the details of the setting are worth reading with that in mind.
