A young Hopi woman appears on a flat rooftop, and her hairstyle is the detail worth noticing: unmarried Hopi women traditionally wore their hair gathered into whorls above the ears, a style that signaled their status. Edward S. Curtis made the picture around 1906 as part of his effort to document Native life across the West, and it was published as plate 409 in a supplementary volume of *The North American Indian*. Rooftops in the stone and adobe villages of the Hopi mesas in northeastern Arizona were used for daily work and gathering, so the scene reflects everyday village life.
