Zosh Clishn, an Apache man, sits wrapped in a blanket in this portrait, which the record dates to about 1906. Edward S. Curtis made it as part of his effort to document Native peoples of North America, a project he pursued for roughly three decades with financial backing from J. P. Morgan. Curtis often posed his subjects in traditional dress and arranged them against plain backdrops, so the blanket and pose reflect his studio choices as much as everyday life. Today viewers read such pictures both for their craft and for the questions they raise about who was portrayed and how.
