Edward S. Curtis gave this c1905 portrait of a Hopi child the title "Hopi Angel," a name that points to the sitter's appearance rather than a documented identity, and the record does not name the child. Curtis worked among the Hopi villages of northeastern Arizona during these years, building the photographic record for his multivolume series *The North American Indian*. His portraits of children often show the careful lighting and composition that shaped how Western audiences pictured Native life at the time. Viewers today may want to consider how much of the image reflects the child and how much reflects the photographer's choices.
