Seated directly on the floor of a hogan, this couple is shown in a setting the catalog highlights through its subject headings on floors, nutrition, and health. The hogan, the traditional Navajo dwelling of logs and packed earth with its doorway facing east, remained common on the reservation in the early 1950s even as frame houses spread. Photographs like this were often made to document living conditions and diet across the Navajo Nation during that period. The 1952 date places the image in a time of rapid change for Navajo families.
