Acoma Pueblo, a mesa-top village in west-central New Mexico that has been continuously inhabited for centuries, is the setting for this portrait of an elderly woman in traditional dress. The photograph was made around 1939, when many Pueblo communities were living under the pressures of the Great Depression and federal Indian policy, and portraits of this kind were often taken to record clothing and daily life. The subjects of the photograph, including its emphasis on dress, reflect the period's broad documentary interest in Native American communities.
