This photograph shows women making pottery at the Pueblo of Isleta, a Tiwa-speaking community on the Rio Grande in central New Mexico. The print carries a copyright line in the name of Charles F. Lummis, a writer and editor who promoted the Southwest and its Native communities to eastern and West Coast readers in the 1880s and 1890s. Hand-built pottery was a long-standing craft in the pueblos, and women typically shaped and fired the wares for household and trade use. The date of about 1890 comes from a caption card and has not been independently verified.
