What sets this print apart is the infant carried on the woman's back, a method Navajo families had long used for young children. The record dates it to about 1914 and says it was probably copied from a photograph by John Gaw Meem, with copyright registered by C.P. Jennings. Portraits like this were widely sold in that period, so the scene was likely shaped for an outside audience as much as recorded for family use.
