Dated 1908 and titled only with the city's name, this view comes from a period when New York's skyline was changing faster than anyone could record it. The Flatiron Building had opened only a few years earlier, and the Singer Building, completed that same year, was one of the new towers pushing the city upward. Photographers of the era often made wide views like this to capture the crowded streets, docks and rooftops of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. The record offers little more detail, so the picture is best read as a snapshot of a city growing up and out at once.
