Taken around 1899, the year Theodore Roosevelt took office as governor of New York, this portrait bears the signature of photographer Z. Ben-Yusuf in red pencil at the lower right. The S.S. McClure Co. held the copyright, and the image was published in *McClure's*, a widely read monthly known for its profiles and investigative journalism. Roosevelt had won the governorship in 1898, after his service with the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War, and his public profile was rising quickly, which made portraits like this one valuable to editors and readers.
