Theodore Roosevelt is shown here in a bust-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, a pose that photographers of the day often used to bring out the sitter's face and expression. The print dates to about 1902, the year Roosevelt, who had become president after William McKinley's assassination in 1901, was well into his first full term in office. It was made as a copyrighted photograph by M. P. Rice of Washington, D.C., part of a wide circulation of studio portraits that helped the public put a face to a president who was then becoming one of the most recognizable figures in the country.
