Theodore Roosevelt appears here in a half-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, a pose that was common in studio photography of the period. The image dates to about 1904, the year Roosevelt won his first full term as president after taking office upon William McKinley's assassination in 1901. Portraits from this stretch of his presidency circulated widely in newspapers, campaign material and printed reproductions, helping to build the vigorous public image he cultivated. Its place in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division makes it a useful record of how the presidency was pictured in the early twentieth century.
