Signed in red pencil by the photographer Zaida Ben-Yusuf, this portrait shows Theodore Roosevelt during his single term as governor of New York, from 1899 to 1900. The S.S. McClure Co. held the copyright, and the image was published in *McClure's*, the popular illustrated monthly that regularly ran photographic portraits of public figures. Roosevelt had won the governorship in 1898 after his fame from the Spanish-American War, and the magazine's interest reflected his rising national profile before he became vice president in 1901.
