A sergeant named Thorne drilling a group in Detroit is the subject of this glass negative, though the record does not say whether the men were soldiers, police, or a citizens' unit. The Bain News Service, run by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers with photographs of current events from about 1900 into the 1920s, and its glass negatives now form a large part of the Library of Congress holdings. Because no date is recorded, the exact occasion is uncertain. The format itself is worth noticing, since the wet-plate and dry-plate glass negatives of this period recorded fine detail in ways that paper prints of the time could not.
