The title names a man, Emory Rigney, and places him in Detroit, though the Library of Congress notes that the name comes from caption cards and other data supplied by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified. The Bain agency, based in New York, sold photographs of people and news events to newspapers from about 1900 into the early 1930s, and its glass negatives form much of the George Grantham Bain Collection. Detroit was a fast-growing industrial city during those years, shaped largely by the automobile trade, so pictures taken there from this period capture a place in rapid change.
