Few symbols say New York as quickly as the Statue of Liberty, and this United Air Lines poster places it at the center of a crowd of sightseers. Issued sometime between 1960 and 1970, it belongs to a period when jet travel was making domestic and international trips more affordable, and airlines competed for travelers with bold, simplified destination posters. The color lithograph was designed by Stan Galli, whose work for United helped shape how American cities were presented to the public. Its focus on visitors rather than the monument alone shows how the airline pitched New York as a place to experience with others.
