Unlike many mother-and-child scenes on this board, this print reproduces a composition by the French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, whose light, affectionate Rococo style shaped late eighteenth-century French taste. The engraver, Audebert, used stipple, a technique that builds images from tiny dots rather than lines, which suits the soft skin tones and gentle light of Fragonard's domestic scenes. The hand coloring adds warmth to the faces and fabrics. Prints like this circulated widely in the 1780s and 1790s, bringing affordable images of maternal tenderness into many homes.
