Shaw's comedy about Julius Caesar and the young Egyptian queen, first written in 1898, gets a bold, flat-color treatment here as a silkscreen advertising a Hollywood Playhouse production. It was made in California in 1938 under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists during the Depression to produce posters for local theaters and public events. Silkscreen let those small units print large runs cheaply, and the simplified shapes and limited palette typical of the WPA style were meant to catch the eye from a street corner. The poster now sits in the Library of Congress's WPA collection, a record of how New Deal artists promoted live theater in Los Angeles.
