The title *After rehearsal* points to a quiet moment offstage rather than a finished performance, though the record does not name the people or the theater. The 1936 date falls during the Depression, when the Works Progress Administration's Federal theater Project was staging productions across the country, but nothing in the record ties this photograph to that program. The print was reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation*, a 1997 visual history of the United States, and was shown in the Library of Congress's *American Treasures* exhibition in 2005 and 2006.
