Few theater records show one building in two states, but this 1922 ink drawing does exactly that for the Plainfield theater at West Second Street and Park Avenue in Plainfield, New Jersey. Known at different times as the Casino theater and later the Astor theater, the building appears both before and after its remodeling, so the drawing invites a side-by-side comparison of the original layout and the revised one. In the early 1920s, many small-city playhouses were reworked to show motion pictures, which meant new seating arrangements and reconfigured interiors as film began to rival vaudeville and stage performance. Because the sheet is a technical drawing, it documents the building's plans rather than its appearance from the street.
