Read's theater, on West Front Street near Park Avenue in Plainfield, New Jersey, survives here as an ink drawing rather than a photograph, so the building's frontage is recorded as a measured design. The drawing dates from about 1925, when movie houses were becoming central to small-city life and many new theaters were built to look like grand civic buildings. Plainfield, a commuter town in Union County, was one of several New Jersey communities that built such venues during the silent film era. The drawing is held by the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division within its architectural and engineering collection.
