A tornado cloud is the subject of this photograph of Gothenburg, Nebraska, a small town on the central Plains, dated on its caption card to about July 7, 1930, though that date has not been verified. The picture was registered for copyright under the name of Otto Wiederanders, a reminder that the Copyright Office once required deposit copies of photographs, which is how many images of ordinary local events reached national collections. Summer storms like this were a common and often frightening sight across Nebraska, and photographs from that period offer a useful record of how rural communities saw severe weather.
