This glass negative records President Herbert Hoover with Lt. Eielson and a second officer, McCracken, on April 8, 1929, about five weeks into Hoover's first months in office. Carl Ben Eielson was an Alaskan bush pilot who had gained national attention in 1928 by flying with the Arctic explorer Hubert Wilkins from Alaska to Spitsbergen, one of the first long-distance flights across the polar region. Meetings like this one put the young aviation field before the new administration. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is worth noting when judging fine detail in the image.
