A Master Mason's diploma is a certificate issued within Freemasonry, the fraternal order whose members advance through degrees and whose documents often combined printed text with engraved emblems such as compasses, squares, and the all-seeing eye. This print is catalogued under a Library of Congress shelflist card that names a Bishop, but the card gives no date and the data has not been verified, so the maker and the lodge involved remain uncertain. Diplomas of this kind were typically decorated to be displayed in a meeting room or a member's home, and the symbolism on them tells you as much about the order's self-image as the lettering does.
