George Washington was a Freemason, initiated in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1752 and later raised to Master Mason, and this print turns that membership into a portrait of the first president in full Masonic regalia. The record gives a circa 1870 date and names Duval, Son & Co. on the shelflist card, though that attribution is noted as unverified. Lithographs of this kind were widely sold in the decades after the Civil War, when Washington's image was used to link patriotism with fraternal lodge life. Masonic imagery like the apron, compass and square is worth examining, since it shows how a lodge member's identity could be presented as a civic virtue.
