Washington was initiated into a Masonic lodge in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1752, and that membership gave printmakers a ready reason to show him in Masonic regalia. This lithograph presents him in that role, with the emblems and setting that marked him as a Mason. The shelflist card associates the print with Strobridge Lithographing Company, a firm known for colorful commercial and patriotic lithographs in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Prints like this one reflected a broader fashion for portraying Washington's civic and fraternal ties, not just his military and presidential career.
