The title "Master Mason" names the third and highest degree in the craft ritual of Freemasonry, the stage at which a member was traditionally raised to full standing in a lodge. The record gives no date, and its attribution to the firm Mayer (Ferd.) & Co. comes from an unverified shelflist card, so the print's origins remain uncertain. Masonic lodges in the United States and Britain produced many such images in the 19th and early 20th centuries, often as certificates, emblems, or decorative pieces for members. Visitors should look at the symbols and costume for clues about the lodge and period the image was meant to represent.
