The title points to a group rather than a single figure: distinguished Freemasons of the Revolution, a theme that later printmakers often used to connect the nation's founding with fraternal lodges. Many leaders of the Revolutionary era belonged to Masonic lodges, which met in taverns and town halls and gave men a network of trust across colonies that were otherwise divided. The shelflist card links the print to the name Strobridge, which is associated with American commercial lithography, but that attribution is unverified and no date is recorded.
