Masons of the Scottish Rite gather at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Virginia to honor "the unknown hero," as the title puts it, with John Henry Cowles named in the record as one of the participants. The tomb at Arlington National Cemetery holds the remains of an unidentified American serviceman from World War I and was dedicated in 1921, so the scene likely dates from the interwar years, when fraternal and veterans' groups often marked the site. The print was made by Underwood & Underwood, a commercial photography firm known for news and stereo views, which helps explain how such ceremonies reached a wide public.
