Few images of the 1885 America's Cup challenge are as direct as this one, which shows the British cutter *Genesta* under sail, flying the flag of the Royal Yacht Squadron (R.Y.S.) that the title records. The yacht came from England to race for the cup held by the New York Yacht Club, and her challenge drew wide attention on both sides of the Atlantic. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for popular lithographs of ships, trains and rural life, turned that interest into a print sold to a public eager for sporting news. The picture is a useful record of how the rivalry was presented to American buyers in the 1880s.
