This pencil sketch shows Haymarket, a crossroads village in Prince William County, Virginia, and is dated June 21, 1863, the day of a cavalry clash there as the Army of the Potomac and Confederate forces moved north toward Gettysburg. The drawing is on thin olive-tinted paper, with its title lettered in the lower right corner. It belongs to the Civil War drawings of Alfred R. Waud, a battlefield artist whose quick field sketches were engraved for newspapers and magazines. The subject line lists destruction and pillage, so the scene likely records the damage that armies left on the countryside.
