Titled *Wootonekanuske*, this portrait is linked in its record to Philip, the Wampanoag sachem also known as Metacom, who died in 1676 at the close of King Philip's War. The catalog also lists the subject as family portrayals and describes the dress as Rhode Island clothing from 1660 to 1680, which suggests a deliberate re-creation of seventeenth-century Native attire rather than a record of everyday life. Fred W. Glasier, a photographer in Brockton, Massachusetts, made and copyrighted the image around 1924, a time when New England pageants and historical performances often drew on the region's colonial past. Such pictures reveal as much about how 1920s audiences imagined that history as about the period itself.
