Titled "Giddap," this 1935 woodcut by Hale Woodruff takes lynching as its direct subject, a crime that the record classifies under the 1930s heading for African Americans subjected to punishment and torture. Woodruff, a painter and printmaker who trained in Indianapolis and Paris and later taught at Atlanta University, worked in a stark, high-contrast style well suited to the woodcut medium. The Harmon Foundation, which supported African American artists through exhibitions and awards in those years, is the source of the print's records, and the pencil signature marks this as an individually signed impression. Its blunt graphic force shows how artists of the period turned to printmaking to confront racial violence.
