The Alton Limited was a named passenger train of the Chicago & Alton Railroad, which ran between Chicago and St. Louis, and this long panoramic print shows the train as a single wide view of railroad life in Illinois. The image was made by the Geo. R. Lawrence Co., a Chicago firm known for panoramic photographs of trains, locomotives, and railyards, and it was registered for copyright in October 1905. Limited trains were premium services that carried fewer stops and more comfortable cars, so the picture reflects the pride railroads took in their flagship runs. The Chicago & Alton was absorbed into the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio system in 1931.
