The caption on this print names the Cascade de Dare, and the number 1377 typed in gold on its front suggests it belonged to a numbered series of travel views. Photochrom prints like this one were made by the Photoglob company in Zürich, Switzerland, which transferred photographs onto lithographic stones and inked each color separately. The process gave nineteenth-century viewers a vivid, colorful picture of places they might never visit, and this print is estimated to date from about 1890 to 1900, when such views were widely sold.
