Roosevelt's head, turned slightly to the left, is the whole subject of this portrait, with no setting or props to pull the eye away from his face. The print dates to about 1932, the year he won the Democratic nomination and then the presidency, when his image was being circulated widely as the governor of New York and a candidate promising a "New Deal" for Americans hit hard by the Great Depression. Portraits from this period were often made for campaign material and newspapers, so a close, straightforward head study like this one reflects how the public was learning to recognize him. The Library of Congress holds the print in its Prints and Photographs Division.
