A rail carrying hogs through the scraping stage at Armour's packing plant sets this stereograph apart from other views of Chicago's meatpacking houses. After scalding, carcasses hung from overhead rails were moved past workers who scraped off the bristles, one step in a fast disassembly line that made the city's packers famous. Kelley & Chadwick issued the card around 1909, a few years after Upton Sinclair's *The Jungle* (1906) drew public attention to conditions in the packing houses. Stereo cards like this one were meant to be viewed through a hand viewer, letting armchair visitors tour industries they would never see in person.
