A clown in full costume posing with two children sets this portrait apart from the studio's more formal sitters. Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C. firm founded in 1905, made portraits of politicians, society figures, and ordinary residents, and its work was widely reproduced in newspapers. Circus and vaudeville clowns were popular subjects in the early twentieth century, and studio portraits of performers often served as publicity or keepsakes. The record gives only a date range of 1905 to 1945, so the exact occasion for the sitting is unknown.
