A portrait of Mary F. Trager, whose name is the only detail the record gives about the sitter, comes from the Washington, D.C., studio of Harris & Ewing. George W. Harris and Harry L. Ewing opened the studio in 1905 and ran it for decades, photographing a wide mix of people in the capital, including officials, society figures and ordinary residents. Because the record dates the picture only to a span between 1905 and 1945, the exact sitting date is uncertain. The studio's large body of glass-plate and film negatives now held by the Library of Congress makes its work a useful record of the period's portrait styles.
