Alice Paul, the suffragist who helped lead the final push for the Nineteenth Amendment and later wrote the Equal Rights Amendment, sat for this portrait at a Washington, D.C., studio. Harris & Ewing, founded in the capital in 1905, photographed many government officials, activists and public figures over four decades, which made its studio portraits a common record of the city's political life. Paul's work in Washington, including the National Woman's Party's pickets outside the White House during World War I, placed her at the center of that world. The studio's exact date for this sitting is not given, so the image is best read as a document of her public presence during the early twentieth century.
