A 1917 portrait of a United States Navy subject, made in Washington, D.C., by the Harris & Ewing studio. The record does not name the sitter, but the year places it in the first months of American entry into the First World War, when the Navy was expanding quickly and recruiting heavily. Harris & Ewing was one of the best-known portrait studios in the capital, and its work from this period often recorded government officials, officers and enlisted men in formal poses. Studio portraits like this one give a useful look at how service members presented themselves at a moment of national mobilization.
