Two Democrats who were prominent in Washington during the 1930s, John Nance Garner and William Bankhead, are the names given for the sitters in this portrait. Garner, a Texas congressman, had served as Speaker of the House before becoming vice president under Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Bankhead, of Alabama, later held the Speaker's post in the late 1930s. The portrait comes from Harris & Ewing, a studio founded in Washington in 1905 that photographed officials, legislators and visitors to the capital for decades. Its collection now forms a major part of the Library of Congress holdings and offers a useful record of the city's public life.
