Maj. Cushman Rice appears here in a formal studio portrait that places him within the U.S. Army's aviation branch, a field still young when the picture was made. The Harris & Ewing studio, which operated in Washington, D.C., from 1905 and photographed many military officers, government officials, and other prominent sitters, produced the image. Its date is recorded only as falling somewhere between 1905 and 1945, a span that covers the Army's first decades of military flight, from the Signal Corps' early aircraft through the creation of the Army Air Service. Portraits like this one preserved the faces of the officers who shaped that work.
