Quantico, the Marine Corps base on the Potomac in northern Virginia, is the place named in this studio portrait. The Harris & Ewing studio began working in Washington, D.C., in 1905, and over the next four decades its photographers made large numbers of formal sittings for government workers, officers and visiting families. Its portraits usually show the posed, carefully lit style of the early twentieth century, when a studio photograph was a deliberate occasion. The record does not name the sitter, so the picture is best read as a window onto that period and its military setting.
